What is mindfulness?
We asked some children to give us their definition. Here’s what they said: “Relaxing out of our daily troubles and stress,” “A way to stay yourself when you’re going through something troubling” and “It’s like getting off of one railroad track and getting onto another one”. Young minds can really be fountains of spiritual wisdom!
When it comes to mindfulness and children, the way forward is creativity and fun. They want fun stuff to do, and if it sounds like something their maths teacher dreamed up they’ll most likely turn their noses up at it.
Children are already in a great place to access a mindful state. The best thing is to invent fun games and interesting activities that get them interacting with their thoughts, senses or even nature and encourage them to see the beauty of life through their own eyes, rather than trying to adapt adult mindfulness practices.
