In the Lessons For Life pack that we’re about to make available to schools to go with our books, there is a quote from the wonderful Dr Seuss:

“Today you are You, that is truer than true.  There is no one alive who is Youer than You.”

Like so many insights, it is a statement of the profoundly obvious that, curiously, we sometimes miss.  It’s a truth worth pointing out to our kids.  Sadly these days, children live under such self-imposed pressure to live up to unreliable visions broadcast to them through social media.

Who should they trust more ?  A gazillion tweets and facebook posts, or the evidence of their own eyes and minds?  Dr Seuss knew.  Those of us who had the pleasure of growing up with his nonsense poems rattling through our brains knew too.

Every so often we all need to put down the screens and remember what Squarehead learned: it’s ok to be you.  When children realise that, they are relieved of the chorus of disapproving voices in their heads telling them that there’s something wrong with their hair, or their face, or their body, or their clothes, or their house, or their life…
