Chasing rainbows
If a dream looks impossible to achieve, wouldn’t it be better to save yourself the trouble of trying and give up? Well, the answer might depend on the dream. If your dream is to be ruler of the world, like a James Bond villain, then maybe you should save us all the trouble and park that one.
If, on the other hand, your dream is merely very difficult to achieve, or even impossible looking – then maybe you should at least give it a try. After all, what kind of world would it be if no-one attempted the impossible? We wouldn’t fly anywhere, talk on the phone, watch TV, or even read books. We probably wouldn’t live in houses. There would no world records. No music. No drama. No paintings. In fact there probably wouldn’t even be us, because the whole process of existing would just be impossible.
A few years ago we decided to become children’s book publishers. Anyone who knew anything about it (which ruled us out!) warned that we were biting off more than we could chew. It was an impossibly competitive world out there and the only certainty was failure. In other words, we were chasing rainbows.
Well we haven’t failed – yet. We still could of course. We have managed to publish three books. We’ve found a partner in the world of organic food who wanted to put our characters on the packaging of a range of delicious, healthy snacks for kids. We’ve made friends at every turn, meeting all sorts of interesting and lovely people who want to help us – just because they can.
As we start 2017, we’re looking at getting Squarehead into schools to help children cope with the stresses and strains of modern life in a series of tailormade lessons. We’re also talking about Squarehead and friends making the leap into children’s TV (impossible by the way!).
We’ve learned so much; not least how much we still don’t know. We’ve realised just how big this mountain is that we’ve set out to climb. We’ve had, and continue to have, the most amazing fun. Even if we eventually throw in the towel and admit defeat, it will have been worth it.
Is there a rainbow you want to chase? What are you waiting for?
